A colour is permanent from the moment its index is appended — the registry has no setter, because changing one would repaint artwork somebody already owns. Nothing here is written anywhere until you copy it out.

Darks and neutrals

DB32's value spine. The three mid-greys are close to each other by design — take one, not two.

Browns, oranges, golds

The warm half of the ramp.

Yellows and greens

Its two greens shade into each other; they read as one family at small size.

Blues and cyans

The widest-spaced family in DB32, and the safest place to take several.

Reds, pinks, purples

Warm-cool contrast against the blues.

The spread — every colour beside every other

DB32 is the ramp spec §5.1 names, and the reason is portability: pixel art is drawn in conventional palettes, so a canvas painted from a bespoke set could never take an existing sprite. White is held back — it is cash — leaving 31 assignable colours.

64px is where §5.2 puts the distinguishability ceiling — roughly 20–24 flat hues — and it is about the size of a marketplace tile. A palette that only separates at full size does not separate.
